Yoga is a broad system encompassing philosophy, physical movement, meditation and daily living – and that’s really just scratching the surface. What sets the physical practice of yoga apart from other disciplines such as Pilates is that yoga is strongly introspective, which can, for some people, transcend to an energetic or spiritual awakening. Yoga is all about calming the mind and obtaining clarity of thoughts, which helps us live a more joyful life.
Using the breath to build awareness in the mind and the body.
To get here, we connect into the body and into the breath. The Yogic path builds our body awareness, and creates balance between stability and softness. By increasing movement adaptability and variability, yoga supports the body to function more optimally, thereby helping with movement in daily life.
Moving with the breath means we have the opportunity to slow down and connect inward – observing not only the sensations in our bodies but also the story that comes up in our head. Yoga is not about stopping these thoughts, it is about not following them; staying aware of your breath and softly focused on the present.
Physical benefits are increased core strength, muscular endurance, mobility, flexibility and balance. Studies show meditation or pranayama (breathing exercises) have beneficial effects on the nervous system, assisting with the immune, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular systems. Whether you are drawn to the purely physical, or the mental benefits, they are both different sides of the same coin.
